Will the Asus Eee PC 1002HA replace the Eee PC 1000H?

Asus Eee PC 1002HA

Laptop Magazine got to spend a few minutes with a non-functional Asus Eee PC 1002HA netbook yesterday. Non-functional, as in it didn’t have a hard drive and wouldn’t power on. But you can check out a bunch of pictures of the shiny new chassis which looks like a cross between the Asus Eee PC 1000H and Eee PC S101 cases. Which is to say, this netbook is a little thinner and a lot nicer looking than the Eee PC 1000H.

On the inside, the 1002HA is practically the same machine as the 1000H. It has a 1.6GHz Intel Atom CPU, a 10 inch screen, 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, 802.11b/g/draft-n, Bluetooth, a 1.3MP camera, a 4-in-1 card reader and it will come in Windows XP and Linux flavors. It will come with a 4200mAh battery instead of the 6600mAh battery that ships with the Eee PC 1000H.

The Eee PC 1002HA is scheduled for a December release in the US, and CNet says it will cost about $499, which is a bit more than the going rate for an Eee PC 1000H right now. And that’s why I was disappointed to read Laptop Magazine’s comment that this model is expected to replace the 1000H. Hopefully Asus will make a higher capacity battery available as an option and continue selling the 1000H for a while longer until the new battery is available, and the price on the 1002Ha drops a bit. With competitors including Lenovo, HP, and MSI continuing to push low priced netbooks with 10 inch screens, it doesn’t make sense for Asus to phase out its cheapest 10 inch model in favor of a pricier version just yet.

Agree about the price, but nice to see some progress. This one is thinner, under an inch. Has an aluminum frame. Obviously an LED-backlit screen given how thin it is. And 802.11n. We want to see these specs progress don't we?

And yes, there should be a 6 cell available at the start. And yes the right shift key is still unacceptable for a 2nd gen. But hey, there's SOME progress here!

I want to buy a new netbook, which one do you think the best, MSI Wind or this eeePC?
Shiny new chassis make me fall in love with this series.

It looks very much like my HP-2133 mini-note to my eyes.

Eek! I want the six-cell battery! Seriously thinking about getting 1000h before it disappears…

If is has a new 10″ screen that can handle a higher resolution and a integrated turbo 3G-modem. I'm for it! But if not i'm still happy with my new 1000H.

I guess its really a matter of personal preferance, because there is really NOT MUCH of a difference between this and the 1000H series besides cosmetic and some SMALL size and weight changes. I would rather have the longer lasting battery of the 1000H than have this 1002HA with less battery power. I read somewhere that in a real world test the 1002HA battery only lasted a little over 3 hours where else the 1000H battery lasts AT LEAST 5 hours in real use…

Also, Asus has NO PLANS to release a higher capacity battery for the 1002HA – So we should ask ourselves if we plan on using a netbook as a desktop or REALLY as a netbook because portability obviously means battery power is VERY important. Something to think about…

i personally like the way the 1000 looks MUCH more (not much of shiny laptop fan) .. and do prefer the 6cell battery (over the 2cell) ..
