Red, pink Dell Inspiron Mini 9 netbooks hit Japan

  • Email

dell-mini-redWay back when Michael Dell first “leaked” news about the Dell Inspiron Mini netbook line to Gizmodo, he was carrying a machine with a glossy red cover. But so far the netbook has only been available in black or white. Now it looks like red and pink models are about to be released – in Japan.

Dell is also releasing a new configuration called the Platinum Package in Japan that will come with a 32GB, Windows XP Home, and  and Microsoft Office 2007. The versions available in the US come with 4GB, 8GB, or 16GB solid state disks. The Platinum Package will set you back 54,980 yen, or about $569 US, while the basic model with a 4GB SSD and Ubuntu Linux costs just 34980 yen, or about $362 US.

Oh boy! Pink and Red lids! How exciting! Hey Dell, how about fixing the terrible keyboard instead!

It's bad enough that the US is sometimes the last to get new models from companies like Asus and Samsung, but Dell is right over here in shoot-'em-up-cowboy Texas…. or maybe the Mini 9 manufacture is outsourced to Asia? Anyway sometimes it seems as though the US is the redheaded stepchild of the netbook world (no offense… some of my most worthy friends are redheaded stepchildren ;)

My main gripe about the keyboard is that, on the US model, the rows are not staggered as much as usual–some alphabet keys are almost squarely above others. If I learned to touch type this way it might mess up my typing skills on a normal keyboard. To me this is more serious than the odd punctuation placement.

On the positive side, they did this to be able to enlarge the keys, which seem to me to be about the size of those on 10-inch netbooks. The UK keyboard has more keys, so they're a bit smaller, but the rows seem to be staggered normally. I don't know which version is sold in Canada.
