Well, I bought my 1000H last week and I am getting 4:45 hours with bluetooth and wifi with webcam off in power saving mode at 20% screen brightness, and 5:35 with same settings with bluetooth and wifi turned off.
And that is when I hardly touch it, just very light usage.

If I do a lot of web browsing with many tabs and some occasional youtube, and with wifi and bluetooth then I get 4 hours of battery life.

Not much...

I've never gotten 8 hours on my Eee 1000H, but I get close — about 6 1/2 hours or a little more in Power Saving mode with wifi off and screen at 50% (which is more than enough).

As a student I could get 8 hours from the notebook I bet. I use my Laptop with the Max power saving features with 3 cell battery and I am able to get 3 hours…and 6 hours on my 6 cell. And that's a duel core with touch screen hp-tx2000

For a student, all I need for taking notes is Wifi and Bluetooth turned off, and the screen brightness ALL the way down. I only need to make out the text I am typing for note taking. I do not “need” the full experience when I “need” to save as much battery as I can. After classes I usually swap out battery and set every thing to full power and catch up on my blogs.

So I bet I could get 8 hours…Word and PowerPoint does not use the CPU much at all.

I have a 901 with the 6 cell battery, 20gb ssd and linux. My only power saving tweak was to turn off bluetooth and run with a medium screen brightness setting. Use includes web browsing with an occasional video; viewing, sorting, uploading pictures with picasa and video chat with skype. In addition, most of the time rhythmbox is playing mp3s. Using the default xandros install I was consistently getting 6 to 7 hours.
I recently switched to ubuntu-eee (which I like much better, I use ubuntu 8.04 on my desktop). I haven't yet tweaked it in any way, but battery life has dropped to 4 to 5 hours. I haven't checked yet, but I don't think ubuntu-eee adjusting the processor speed.

I have the six-cell battery, and it doesn't protrude out the back. Only nine-cells do on the Eee, to the best of my knowledge.
