Asus to further blur lines between netbooks and notebooks

Asus may be best known for making netbooks and motherboards. But the company also sells full sized laptop computers. And soon it will sell… I don’t know what to call a 12 inch noetbook, maybe three quarters sized laptops?

DigiTimes reports that Asus plans to launch a notebook with a 12 inch screen that will be just about 1 inch thick and look a lot like an Eee PC S101.

Now, Asus won’t be the first company to introduce a 12 inch notebook. And I’m sure it won’t be the last. But it’s interesting to see the company’s netbook design choices spill over into its general notebook line. Aside from the larger display and lack of any Eee branding, it’s not clear how the new computer, which will be part of the company’s ZX series, will differ from the Eee PC S101. It will certainly cost a few bucks more. DigiTimes says it will be priced around NT $30,000 or about $900 US.

I buy a Fujitsu Lifebook S Series 4542 12″ in 2001, the media call “ultraportables” to this kind of computers then.. ie: cnet reviews..

Why couldn't they follow in Dell's footsteps and release a 12″ netbook. I don't need extra power, but would like a bigger screen and more pixels to work with.

Something along the lines of an old thinkpad x-series would be awesome. Including the screen design so you could have an extended battery that sticks out the back instead of adding a slant to the laptop.

I'm excited to see reviews of the Dell E-slim or whatever it's called these days and hope it'll inspire other manufacturers.

I'm confused, is this running a “netbook” atom/945 chipset or, is this simply a centrino 2 ultraslim-ultraportable?

There's was also that n20 series lappy that was in the news a while ago that launched with the n10 and discrete 9300gs graphics. Anybody know whatever happened to that guy? No stateside launch in the cards?

This and the Dell E slim probably don't warrant coverage due to their almost-$1000 price points. It's not the screen that pushes them out of the netbook category, it's the cost.

I'm pretty sure the price will be closer to $700 USD for the Dell. The $1000 price point being reported is in Australian dollars.
