Asus Eee PC 904HD now available… kind of

Looking for an Eee PC with a 9 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display and an 80GB hard drive and don’t care too much about being able to get one of those newfangled Intel Atom CPUs? It looks like the Eee PC 904HD, which is powered by a 900MHz Intel Celeron CPU is starting to ship.

The 904HD has the same chassis as the Asus Eee PC 1000 even though it has a smaller screen. That means you get the larger keyboard that comes with the 1000, but the slightly cheaper display that comes with the 900. The computer also has a 0.3 megapixel camera and a 6 cell battery.

Buy.com sent out an ad this morning suggesting that you could pick up an Eee PC 904HD for $389.95 plust free shipping. But the product page shows that the 904HD is out of stock and “unavailable from the manufacturer” at the moment. Amazon is showing the 904HD for $399, but there’s no image to go with the listing, which always makes me nervous.

Meanwhile, Blogeee found that French retailer Surcouf has the 904HD in stock for 329.90€, or about $470 US.

I don't get the reason for this machine existing – it seems the worst of all possible worlds

Me neither. Maybe it's a dump for extra parts?
