You need to make sure your cable is in the right way round. There is a link to an image on one of the posts below, but as you look at the disk top down (writing facing you) you should see the bare silver contacts of the cable. Make sure it's the same version (e.g. XP Home Edition) and not an upgrade copy, with as late a service pack as possible.
