How to add a hard drive to an Eee PC 901

  • Email

Eee PC hacker extraordinaire jkkmobile has posted a video showing how to add a hard drive or a CF card adapter to an Eee PC 901. The whole process is made extraordinarily easy by the fact that Asus included a little shelf in the computer that’s almost exactly the right size for resting a 1.8 inch hard drive.

Because the Eee PC 901 includes two SSD modules, you can actually add a hard drive or extra flash drive without removing the module that holds your operating system. It’s almost like Asus wanted people to hack this device.

The one problem jkkmobile ran into was that it was a bit hard to connect the hard drive without cutting away at some of the plastic. So if you’re willing to void your warranty, you might want to use some wire cutters or a sharp knife.

After waiting for the Linux 901 to come out, I bought the XP version on ebay yesterday. I bought it on ebay because I got 20% cashback from microsoft live search, which brought the total price (shipped) to 479. that’s where I think the eee should be. Now I’m going to use that extra money and put it back into my eee anyway, get a 80gb 1.8 hard drive and a 16gb sdhc. Plus the internal four, I’ll have a 100gb eee. Hopefully I’ll have this done in the next few weeks.

    jkmobile,
Thanks for your great advice – great job. With regard to adding a 1.8″ HHD to the Asus Eee PC 901, you mentioned that the HHD will not fit over the SSD such that the SSD must be removed. Would a 5mm (vs 8mm) thick drive fit over the SSD?
    regards, drew lelli

I just bought a hard drive for my Eee 901. When i was about to connect it i discovered that the ide port shown in the video is missing in my computer…. There is just an empty space saying ide 3… Is it possible to find some kind of adapter and connect it to the ide port of the SDD?? Help appreciated!

    very interesting tutorial..
im thinking can you do these as well on the eee pc 900 platform?

Cheaper bulding: models with HD/SSD uses same casing; no need to construct new cases.

I was really excited until I found that my eee-901 only has empty solder points where the ZIF connector should be. I have no idea why there is one in howto but I found that some people actually soldered a ZIF connector manually with some success but unfortunate waranty voiding.

    Thanks for a great guide.
One question: How think was your 1.8″ HDD drive? Would 8mm fit this place (with SSD removed)?
